    No, indeed, no longer frequently used in our churches. But it is a nice 18th-century social justice hymn, in the theological and linguistic terms of the day...

    He, in the time of general grief,
    Shall find the Lord has bowels, too.

    My laughter was doubled because just this morning I preached at my home church the sermon my Meadville colleague Bruce Beissner has dubbed my "shit sermon," whose primary topic is the practice of gratitude.

    Well, it happens, as they say. But let's not mix it with the metaphor used by Morton Salt...
